(TANJUNG PELEPAS PORT)

ABOUT PORT TANJUNG PELEPAS
The Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) is a port for container ships located on the eastern mouth of the Pulai River in south-western Johor, Malaysia, and is part of the APM Global Terminal Network, which holds a minority share in the joint venture. Receiving its maiden vessel on 10 October 1999 on a three-month trial operation, it set a world record as the fastest growing port with 1 million twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) of containers handled after 571 days of operations. The good performance sealed the port's fate, and it was officially launched by then Prime Minister of Malaysia, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, on 13 March 2000. The port continues to register spectacular growth establishing itself as Malaysia's largest port
The Johor Port Authority (JPA) regulates and is responsible for all Tanjung Pelepas Port operations. The JPA also monitors Tanjung Pelepas Port performance to assure continued high-quality operations. The JPA's Operation and Regulatory Division is the main operating body, and several units within the Division are responsible for specific activities including safety and security, fire and rescue, and overseeing dangerous cargo. The Marine Unit within the JPA strives to assure maximum efficiency in the work of Tanjung Pelepas Port's pilots.

Protected by a deep-water bay, Tanjung Pelepas Port (PTP) occupies 1935 acres. Located just 45 minutes from the busiest international shipping lanes in the world, Tanjung Pelepas Port offers natural features that allow it to offer relatively short waiting times for arriving vessels to anchor. Tanjung Pelepas Port offers a sheltered bay without tide restrictions. The terminal has depths ranging from 15 to 19 meters (49.2 to 62.3 feet). The 12.6-kilometer (20.3-mile) access channel and 720-meter (2362-foot) turning basin allow Tanjung Pelepas Port to accommodate the biggest cargo vessels.
Almost as soon as it opened in 1999, Tanjung Pelepas Port set world records for its fast growth. Tanjung Pelepas Port changed Southeast Asia's shipping profile, soon gaining Maersk Sealand as a 30% partner. Maersk, the largest shipping company in the world, then transferred its Asia operations from Singapore to Tanjung Pelepas Port. In both 2000 and 2001, Tanjung Pelepas Port was recognized as the "Best Emerging Container Terminal" by Lloyd's List Maritime Asia.

In 2002, the second biggest shipping company in the world, Evergreen Marine Corporation, moved its operations from Singapore to Tanjung Pelepas Port. Promising less congestion and fewer delays than Singapore, this trend has continued over the years. K-Line, Safmarine, and Mediterranean Shipping Company have established operations in Tanjung Pelepas Port.
